title: Third-Party Data Breaches Bring Trickle Down Trouble
description: Doing business with vendors can put you at risk for a data breach if they're not cybersafe. Don't be the next SMB cyberhack through no fault of your own.

# [Third-Party Data Breaches Bring Trickle Down Trouble](https://info.bitxbit.com/blog/third-party-data-breaches-bring-trickle-down-trouble)

Well, it happened again. Another huge bomb hit the cybersecurity world with last month’s Microsoft Exchange hack. In light of it, it’s a good time to look at third-party and supply chain risk to see how it can impact businesses and how to mitigate it.

The numbers aren’t good. Over [90% of US businesses](https://www.scmagazine.com/home/security-news/supply-chain-weak-security-link-for-92-percent-of-u-s-companies/) experienced a cybersecurity incident like a data breach in 2020 because of a third party or supply chain fault.

You don’t want to be next.

It’s important to prepare for this risk because it’s *less* of a possibility and *more* of an eventuality in today’s connected world. These connections are one of the reasons why these breaches have ramped up so steadily. More and more information about people and businesses are accumulating in Dark Web markets and data dumps. This is providing fuel for cyberattacks that perpetuate the cycle, feeding the market. [More than 60%](https://www.idagent.com/blog/10-dark-web-facts-you-need-to-see-right-now/) of the information available now on the Dark Web could damage businesses, and data breaches exposed [36 billion records](https://www.varonis.com/blog/cybersecurity-statistics/) in just the first half of 2020.

More than [60% of data breaches](https://www.nationaldefensemagazine.org/articles/2020/7/2/hackers-putting-global-supply-chain-at-risk) are a result of exposure through third party or supply chain risk. Unfortunately, any business partner, supplier, or service provider with sloppy cybersecurity practices can put an innocent business at risk by doing things that make it easy for data to walk out the door.

The siren song of making money on the Dark Web in a challenging economy has increased the possibility of data being snatched for nefarious purposes. An estimated [30% of data breaches](https://enterprise.verizon.com/resources/reports/2020-data-breach-investigations-report.pdf) involve internal actors with ill intent, including employees moonlighting by selling data or access on the Dark Web.

In all, 2020 was not a friendly year for businesses when it came to cybersecurity, especially in the supply chain. About [80% of firms](https://www.comparitech.com/vpn/cybersecurity-cyber-crime-statistics-facts-trends/) responding to a recent survey said that they’d experienced an increase in cyberattacks in 2020. Supply chain [cybersecurity risk warnings](https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20200709005111/en/Supply-Chain-Risk-Universally-Declines-in-May-but-Global-Vulnerability-Remains-High) increased right along with surging cybercrime, up by 80% in Q2 2020 alone. [Two in five](https://www.idagent.com/10-essential-facts-about-cybercrime-in-2020) SMBs were impacted by a cyberattack in 2020. You don't want to be one of them in 2021.

We’re here to help and have the cybersecurity and Dark Web monitoring tools that will take on the third-party breaches and protect your proprietary data from cyber threats.
